Head Trip

Ever since I cut my long hair to shoulder length, it's been a total crapshoot as to how it dries naturally. The simple summer solution I've found is to wrap a headscarf around it while it's drying - it keeps the roots nice and flat and amps up the waves at the bottom. So just this past weekend, I walked out of my bedroom with my Chanel camellia print scarf tied in a do-rag on my head, when my tweenage daughter with much disdain in her voice said, "Ugh Mom, if you're going to wear that again at least let me make it look less nerdy." She pulled the scarf further back on my head to let more hair show, and loosened the front pieces to hang down over my face. I could see where she was going, and I did oblige her, but I had a whole other look in mind. From my point of view, no one ever did or will look more chic in a headscarf than Jackie O herself.  Yes at first glance they make her look a bit too much like the verging-on-freakish Edie Beale (her Grey Gardens' cousin), but they also added the perfect touch of unexpected eccentricity to her otherwise exceedingly classic and tasteful looks. I expect it will take my daughter a few more years to understand that, if ever.

  2. Great post. Maybe Jackie is why I've become obsessed with Hermes scarves this past year. I really enjoyed your book, it's such a great resource, so I'm glad to find your blog (via the NYT article).

  3. Hi I just discovered your blog trough the NY Times link. I do have to say I LOVED your book !!! Its one of my favourite fashion/style books. I actually also purchased the book you commented on: Cheap chic. But in Ducth ! (It was only like 5 euro = 3 $) it had been translated and also saddly kind of altered but some of the parts are the same as the original. Just wanted to say I really loved your book and I was supersuprised that someone like you working at vogue and all would be so inspired by the pioneerwoman. I would have never guessed that. Anyways have fun here in Europe! Greetings from the Netherlands !!!

    1. I, also, find it odd for her to be inspired by The Pioneer Woman. Unfortunately, themarlborowoman.com bloggess has added Amanda to her list of victims. She tries to publicly humiliate any blogger who mentions TPW favorably.

  4. You are so right! No one but her could wear a head scarf and make it look classy.

  6. And let's not forget Queen Elizabeth II. Not quite as sophisticated a fashionista as Jackie O, but she does make a statement riding horses with her Hermes scarf blowing in the wind.
